West Ashley is one of the oldest suburban residential districts in Charleston, SC. History:

The oldest suburban residence is the home situated at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. In 1670, the first English colonists settled at Charles Towne Landing. The site, through models of the old town, offers its visitors a glimpse of how Charles Towne became one of the wealthiest colonies in America. This attraction also houses an animal forest where indigenous species of bison, elk, black bear, fox and deer can be found. The forest has been designed by famed naturalist Jim Fowler. Other attractions in West Ashley include three of the region’s most visited plantations - Middleton Place, Drayton Hall and Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. Many of the neighborhoods of West Ashley, developed in the 1950s, also have their own historic significances.

Demography:

West Ashley has a 72,017 population, according to figures released by the Census Bureau in December 2015. It is the 3rd most populated area in Charleston. The population of the suburb has more than doubled since 1960. The community has a 40% population of single residents, 73% of homeowners and 45% of college educated. Most people in West Ashley prefer to travel by car or bike to local attractions.

West Ashley is in proximity to neighborhoods such as Wappoo Heights, Edgewater Park and South Windermere. West Ashley is also popular among property buyers for large homes with expansive wood work and waterfront.

The suburb offers its residents a number of choices to bring fun and entertainment to their lives. Because of the location of the West Ashley, it has become quite popular among visitors for its water activities such as boating. Several deep-water home properties are available in the suburb for purchase.West Ashley also houses golf courses, tennis courts and swimming pools. Boating enthusiasts can also take advantage of a cruise along the Ashley River.  It is in proximity to grocery stores, restaurants and shopping centers of West Ashley’s neighborhoods.  The suburb also houses many dining choices.
