History of Daniel Island:
The Island derived its name from its former inhabitant the colonial governor of the Carolinas, Robert Daniell. The place was formerly owned by the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation and was limited to farming, cattle ranching and as a private hunting retreat. Today, the Island hosts a number of buildings such as national golf courses, sports facilities, business complexes, schools and restaurants. All this wouldn’t have been possible without a master plan sponsored by the Guggenheim Foundation. Under the plan, the development of residential properties began in 1996. In 1997 the island was purchased by developer Daniel Island Company.
Daniel Island is located about 15 miles from Charleston’s historic district and 8 miles from the airport. The Islands most attractive places are located within a 20-minute drive. The residents of Daniel Island enjoy all the facilities of modern living.
The Island boosts hundreds of acres of parks, two professional sports facilities – the Family Circle Tennis Center and MUSC Health Stadium and a private country club, the Daniel Island Club, which hosts the Nationwide Tour Championship, the final event of the Nationwide Tour. The Island also has two golf courses by Tom Fazio and Rees Jones as well as two churches and three schools.Daniel Island has eight key parks viz. Barfield Park, Center Park, Cochran Park, Codner's Ferry Park, Daniel Island Park, Etiwan Park, Pierce Park and Smythe Park. It also has a downtown area where many businesses, restaurants, doctors' offices, shops and condominiums are located.
